The Longest Bridge in the World

Which bridge can claim the title „longest bridge in the world“ is somewhat controversial. It does depend on what you consider a bridge. There are a number of railway bridges that aren’t much more than steel frames. The longest of these bridges is the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge. She is part of the high speed railway connection between Shanghai and Nanjing and is roughly 165 kilometres long. That’s ridiculous. This so called bridge is more like a viaduct and crosses the marchland at the Yangtze River Delta. It is built on stilts but that’s about it.

The equivalent road bridge – a road on stilts – is 54 kilometres long and in Thailand. Bangkok built the Bang Na Expressway (in and around Bangkok) mainly on stilts so you could consider it one long bridge.

The longest of what we’d consider a proper bridge is the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge. It is a road bridge with a six-lane motorway across the Jiaozhou Bay in China’s Shandong province and most impressive. And if nothing else it can claim the title “Longest bridge over water”. It is roughly 43 kilometres long.

The one thing all of these constructions have in common: They were built in Asia. The longest bridge outside of Asia is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in southern Louisiana. It is just over 38 kilometres long and can – if nothing else – claim the title: “Longest continuous bridge on earth over water”.
